Using basic wood carving tools – gouges,
files, and knives – I create figures of people that mean something
to me, figures inpired by everyday funny or unusual happenings that
I've experienced. My personal imagination is, of course, a large part
of the process as well, and many of my ideas are a combination of
memories, events, old photos, relatives, self and – more than
any of these – the emotions that bring all of these out and
tie them together.
I've recently returned to Ann Arbor, Michigan, after living
in San Francisco, California for two thoroughly enjoyable years. San
Francisco's cityscape stimulated me; its people that I observed inevitably
influenced my carvings. I found that, to me, there was power to be
found in creating an entire group of carvings rather than working
on singular pieces as I have done in the past. I've also been able
to enjoy working with mahogany since living in San Francisco, which
has opened up doors for me, as well.
Just as these carvings have allowed me to connect with
people in a way I could not have seen, this site offers a chance for
you to connect with me. If you own a piece of my work, please drop
me a line – I'd love to see where everyone ended up!
